1.2 PURPOSE OF STUDY
The main purpose of this study was to investigate as to the placement in working life of the Masters of Science in Engineering who had studied Biomedical Engineering at Tampere University of Technology (TUT). The objectives set for the study included obtaining answers for the following questions:
- How soon after their graduation did Masters of Science in Engineering acquire a job?
- Where did they find a placement and with what type of job description?
- How did their job description correspond with their education at TUT?
- Did their job description involve Biomedical Engineering?
This section of the study was conducted as a postal questionnaire study.
In addition to the questionnaire study, it was also investigated, by utilizing the TUT archive and student register, as to the starting and graduation dates and professional subject combinations of those students who had included Biomedical Engineering in their degree programme as a short or long professional subject. In addition to students with Biomedical Engineering studies, the archive and student register were also used in determining the titles and authors of all Master’s, Licentiate and Doctoral theses submitted to Ragnar Granit Institute by June 1997.
The primary purpose of the study is to provide Ragnar Granit Institute with feedback, on the basis of which the education provided by the Institute can be further developed. We hope that the report of the study will assist, not only educational institutions related to Biomedical Engineering, but also other institutions of higher education in observing and planning their instruction.
